2022 Ford Fiesta Ecoboost Hybrid – 5 things you should know

The Mk7 Ford Fiesta debuted in November 2016, and it has been updated for MY2022. The latest version of the brand’s smallest electrified car is available to order now in the UK. Changes aren’t ground-breaking, but small additions make it a compelling option to consider for buyers who are looking for a small and efficient hatchback. Here are 5 things you must know about the 2022 Ford Fiesta Ecoboost Hybrid:

1. Minimal design upgrades

While June 2020 saw the removal of the diesel variant and the addition of hybrid tech to Ford’s best-selling hatchback, the 2022 Ford Fiesta is a cosmetic update. The design changes are concentrated at the front and are fairly minimal. Of course, the exact changes on the exterior vary as per the variant. Each new variant has a more distinguished styling with unique fascia and grille designs as the signature attributes.

At the front, the Ford Fiesta has gained a confident appearance with more angular headlights, a larger radiator grille, a redesigned bonnet that sets the nose higher and more prominent side air vents. LED headlights are standard, and there’s a new Matrix LED headlight option that offers Glare-Free High Beam functionality.

For a fresher appearance, Ford has introduced seven new alloy wheel designs. The two new paint options — Boundless Blue and Beautiful Berry — catch the most attention at this angle. The halogen lights have received new black surrounds at the back, while a Premium Black outer finish stylises the optional LED taillights. The ICE and the hybrid variants look identical, and the only way to visually distinguish them is the small hybrid badge on the tailgate.

2. Customisable digital cockpit

The interior design of the 2022 Ford Fiesta is no different from the old car. The main change on the inside is the availability of a 12.3-inch customisable digital instrument cluster. What’s unique about this display is that drivers can configure the display to prioritise certain information that they deem is more important, like navigation, calling and audio or range, for example.

3. No SYNC 4 AVN yet

The front is a simple 3-part design comprising the steering and the instrument cluster, the infotainment and the centre console and an uncluttered co-driver’s view on the right. The 8-inch touchscreen supports Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system, one generation older than the new SYNC 4 system offered on other Ford cars.

The touchscreen supports Android Auto and Apple Carplay, doubles up as a rearview camera, and offers other calling and audio functions. The cabin layout continues to be simple, but it’s certainly very functional. Safety improvements include the addition of Local Hazard Information and Wrong-Way Alert to the advanced driver assistance systems.

4. Efficient mild-hybrid powertrain continues

For 2022, the seventh-gen Fiesta soldiers on with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost Hybrid engine Ford introduced in 125 hp and 155 hp versions in June 2020. This engine features 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. Instead of a standard alternator, the car has a belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BSG), which allows recovering energy usually lost during braking and coasting to charge a 48-volt lithium-ion battery pack.

Using the energy stored inside the additional battery pack, the BSG can provide torque assistance (up to 20 Nm) to the engine and energy for running the car’s electrical ancillaries. The car’s Auto Start-Stop system can turn off the engine in situations like when coasting to stop below 25 kmph (15 mph), and then the BSG can quietly restart the engine in just 350 milliseconds.

The mild-hybrid system determines how and when to charge the battery allowing for the best driving experience. Depending on the situation, it also judges when and how much torque the car needs to be supplied with. It offers almost a 5 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency in the 125 hp version.

5. Most affordable Ford car in the UK

The new Ford Fiesta Ecoboost Hybrid price starts at GBP 18,940 (Trend) in the UK. There are four hybrid variants to choose from — Trend, Titanium, ST-Line and Active. The Titanium is priced at GBP 19,820, while the ST-Line with a sporty body kit starts at GBP 20,770. The fully loaded Active will set customers back by GBP 21,170. All prices are OTR, UK.
