2022 Kia Ceed SW PHEV can do 57 km in EV mode [Update]

Kia has pulled the covers off the new Ceed SW and Proceed with a host of changes to its exterior, interior, equipment list, and mechanicals. The Kia Ceed SW and Kia Proceed will enter production lines in August 2021 and will go on sale in Europe by Q4 of 2021.

2022 Kia Ceed SW and Kia Proceed Design

The exterior design of the Kia Ceed SW and Kia Proceed is altered subtly with the new revised ‘tiger nose’ grille, with the PHEV model getting a closed grille with contrast colour touches to it. There are new full-LED headlamps, dual-functioning tri-arrow-themed vertical daytime running lamps, and tri-arrow-themed modules for the integrated fog lamps.

On the side, the new Kia Proceed features two large air intakes through the front bumper and new alloy wheel designs – 16-inch silver alloys for baseline models and 17-inch gloss black alloys for GT-Line. Both the vehicles get reprofiled boot design with new LED combi tail lamps, in the middle of which sits the new Kia logo.

Interior

Customers can now choose from nine different upholsteries for Kia Ceed SW and Kia Proceed, including black suede leather seats with grey stitching on GT-Line. The GT-Line variants further get a new leather-wrapped gear lever.

The cabin looks thoroughly modern with a revised frameless 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto and a new 12.3-inch TFT instrument console with improved graphics and four different customizable themes, which can also change according to the weather and time of the day.

Features

The Kia Ceed SW and Kia Proceed now come with an enhanced Kia Connect smartphone app, which gets features like Bluetooth search via voice recognition, third party calendar link with navigation, valet mode to determine vehicle’s location, start/stop battery charging and last-mile navigation with augmented reality. The users can now back up their Kia Connect preferences via the cloud and transfer settings through a new ‘user profile transfer’ feature. This allows them to switch to other Kia Connect equipped cars with the exact same pre-saved settings.

Other primary features include a powered driver’s seat with memory function, eight-speaker JBL sound system, ventilated front seats, heated front and rear seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, electrically foldable second-row seats and a powered tailgate.

Safety

Both the Kia Ceed SW and Kia Proceed now come blessed with a whole new range of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), the list of which includes blind-spot collision avoidance assist (BCA), driver attention warning (DAW+) with vehicle departure alert and traffic sign recognition, rear cross traffic collision avoidance assist (RCCA), forward collision avoidance assist (FCA), lane keep assist, intelligent speed limit warning, manual speed limit assist, high beam assist and lane follow assist (LFA) with smart cruise control (SCC). The car also gets a rearview monitor and a safe exit warning (SEW) system.

Powertrain

Apart from the conventional ICE engines, the Kia Ceed range will come with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, a combination of a 1.6-litre GDI petrol engine and an 8.9 kWh battery pack. While the maximum power and torque outputs of the powertrain in combined mode is 141 PS and 265 Nm, respectively, the car can run in a pure electric mode for 57 km. The powertrain gets a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox as standard, with the vehicle getting three different drive modes on offer – Eco, Comfort and Sport.

New Ceed in the UK

Kia has decided to pull the plug on the Ceed Sportswagon PHEV in the UK in an odd move.

According to a report on Autocar, a company spokesperson said that the small crossover XCeed PHEV gets 2X the sales in the UK of the Sportswagon PHEV and that the XCeed PHEV would continue. However, there haven’t been changes to the lineup for the European mainland, and the 2022 Ceed Sportswagon PHEV will remain. The Kia Ceed Sportswagon went on sale in the UK in 2017, but the PHEV entered the market only in 2020.

Further, even in Europe, all the engines have been carried forward from the previous-gen Ceed. In the UK, the wider Ceed model line-up will remain unchanged. The Ceed Sportswagon, on the other hand, will now be offered with the 1.0-litre and the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engines as well as a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid diesel engine.

Production

Kia will start the production of Proceed at its European manufacturing facility in Zilina, Slovakia, in August. Deliveries will start across Europe by Q4 of 2021.
