Land Rover prioritizes Range Rover EV among electric models – Report

Unlike models from previous years, the next-gen Range Rover will allow Land Rover to launch a Range Rover EV. While an all-electric Range Rover isn’t coming out this year, it is a priority at Land Rover.

A report from Autocar says that a pure electric Range Rover holds a higher priority than any other previously planned dedicated Land Rover EV for Thierry Bollore, the new CEO of Jaguar Land Rover. Land Rover’s all-new, fifth-generation Range Rover is currently undergoing development, and according to a report, JLR is rethinking how modern luxury should look in the new decade.

The all-new Range Rover will come out in late 2021, and it will based on the “high” version of the MLA platform, as per a more recent report. This architecture is compatible with different powertrains ranging from plug-in and mild hybrid to battery-electric systems.

Though the luxury SUV will arrive with petrol and diesel engines, all eyes will be on the all-electric model that is expected to receive a massive 90 kWh battery pack for providing more than adequate performance and range, and reap the benefits of the 4WD setup from the collaboration with BMW. The electrification of the Range Rover fits snugly with the company’s ‘Destination Zero’ emissions pledge, but Car Magazine also says that it would raise the car’s off-road game.

JLR vehicle line director Nick Collins, in an interview in Nov 2019, said:

On the road, the increased refinement and silent running (of an electrified powertrain) excites me. And off-road, you get peak torque at zero revs together with much more accurate control.

The new Range Rover will be based on the same platform as the 2022 Jaguar XJ (teased), also with all-electric powertrain.

One aspect Land Rover will not take the same view as Jaguar is the design – the iPace redefined the design of the SUV with its cab-forward form and sleek silhouette. Technology will not give direction to the form of the new Range Rover which its designers are confident will be far easier to execute than the Defender which applied a lot of pressure on the team. The direction is defined and the potential is there in the Velar’s reductivist design to derive the final look of the all-new Range Rover, the report concludes.
