First Look Review: BYD Atto 3 is a spacious option for urban SUV shoppers

The BYD Atto 3 is a fully electric C-segment SUV developed on BYD’s dedicated e-Platform 3.0 architecture. The model is configured with front-wheel drive, a single electric motor, and a Blade Battery, making it an accessible urban SUV for a small family.

We had the opportunity to check out a global-spec version in the flesh to see if it still feels current now in the fourth year since its international launch.

Design

At the front, the BYD Atto 3’s fascia uses a closed front with a slip-vent-style faux grille. The automatic LED headlamps with integrated DRLs feature high-beam assist as standard and are connected by a silver horizontal trim element that carries the BYD lettering.

The lower bumper section incorporates air inlets and a central intake opening used for cooling requirements.

From the side, the Atto 3 features a compact SUV body profile with black plastic cladding used around the wheels and along the side skirts to lower visual weight. Roof rails are finished in aluminium and follow the roofline toward the rear pillar. Electrically folding and heated side mirrors are standard across the lineup.

The rear uses a full-width LED taillamp on the tailgate with the BYD logo positioned centrally above it. The rear window features a wiper as standard and is topped by a roof-mounted spoiler. Higher trims adds a power-operated tailgate.

Wheel size for both trims measures 18 inches with a black and silver alloy finish. In the UK market, exterior colour options include Surfing Blue, Obsidian Black, Time Grey, and Skiing White.

Interior

The interior of the Atto 3 is configured for five and features a circular theme used across AC vents, door-mounted speakers, the drive selector, and various other elements. Seating and steering surfaces use vegan leather upholstery across all trims, with a black or blue-and-grey dual-tone interior theme.

In the UK, front seats are heated, with six-way power adjustment for the driver and four-way power adjustment for the front passenger. A panoramic glass sunroof with a sunshade is standard.

The interior layout includes a 5-inch digital instrument cluster and a rotating centre touchscreen measuring 12.8 inches on the Comfort trim and 15.6 inches on the Design trim, with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay standard on both. A wireless charging pad is fitted at the front, along with Type-A and Type-C USB ports available across both rows on all trims.

Cargo capacity measures 15.5 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and expands to 47.3 cubic feet with the seats folded.

Experience in the Atto 3

Getting into the BYD Atto 3 feels straightforward, even with my six-foot frame. Once seated, I notice strong back support and good shoulder support. The headrests are not adjustable, but they feel supportive.

I can find a good driving position easily, and under-thigh support feels acceptable. The armrest feels comfortable, and outward visibility looks good.

I notice the cabin design feels playful. The air vents use a concentric, cylindrical-style theme, and the centre vents sit lower than expected but feel tactile to use. The door panels include string-like elements that resemble a musical instrument, and I can tug them like strings.

Seat trim combines blue upholstery with red stitching, with black-finished side bolsters. A physical volume roller and power button are present, along with a physical AC on/off button, while temperature and fan controls sit in the touchscreen. During my time in the car, the screen responded quickly.

Moving to the rear with the front seat set to my position, getting into the back seat is easy. I ran into a usability issue when trying to exit from the front, as the interior door release button is placed high near a small speaker and was not immediately obvious.

In the rear, the bench feels comfortable. The backrest does not recline, and the seats fold 60:40. Knee room is just adequate. The floor is flat, which helps the centre position, and three average-size adults can fit across with some compromise.

Headroom feels good, and under-thigh support is acceptable, although the seating posture places the knees slightly higher than preferred. Rear air vents repeat the playful design theme, and USB ports sit low. A fold-down centre armrest includes cupholders, and the large panoramic glass roof floods the cabin with light.

Specifications

The Atto 3 uses a 60.48 kWh Blade Battery and comes with conservative specs. WLTP-rated driving range is listed at up to 260 miles combined. Charging from 30-80 percent can be completed in 29 minutes using DC fast charging (88 kW), while a full AC charge requires approximately 6.5 hours.

A single permanent-magnet synchronous motor drives the front wheels, producing 150 kW (201 hp) with 310 Nm (229 lb-ft) of torque. Acceleration from 0-62 mph takes 7.3 seconds, while top speed is limited to 99 mph.

Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert with braking, lane-keep assist, lane-change assist, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and a 360-degree camera system with multiple radars.
