These design elements from the Tata Sierra concept are going to production [Update]

Work on the IMPACT 3.0, Tata Motors’ next design language, has started while India awaits the launch of the final IMPACT 2.0 products Tata Tigor EV, Tata HBX and Tata Gravitas.

In an interview published on financialexpress.com this week, Pratap Bose, Vice President – Global Design, Tata Motors, talked about the design philosophy of next-gen Tata cars, possibly including a production Tata Sierra EV. “The birth of IMPACT 3.0, I must say, has happened during these difficult times,” he said, referring to the work done by Tata Motors designers during the Coronavirus lockdown.

The Tata Tiago introduced the IMPACT design language in 2016, and IMPACT 3.0 could debut in a mid-size SUV before going to the next-gen Tata Tigor or the next-gen Tata Tiago, whichever arrives first. The sub-4 metre sedan will have an EV variant likely following a few months later.

Tata Motors has already dropped hints of the IMPACT 3.0 on the Tata Sierra EV concept. EVW readers will remember us reporting on the pre-show teasers and speculating if the company was listening to pulse of the market and how it was the ideal time to answer the call of the SUV enthusiast by bringing back the Sierra name.

The Tata Sierra EV offers a modern and optimistic look at the future of the Tata SUV family – the company is presenting the HBX concept as its forerunner to a Maruti Ignis challenger, and in the early part of this new decade it has to fill the white space between the Nexon and Harrier with a mid-size SUV, as well as design the next-gen Nexon and the facelifts of the Harrier and Gravitas. The design recipe for future models is taking form since the Auto Expo 2020.

Observing the vertically arranged lights, recessed door handles (also present on the Kia Sonet concept), the wider grille polygon and upper lights that are connected separately from the grille, we asked Pratap Bose if these were the design nuggets to expect on the IMPACT 3.0 design language that will be guidebook for future Tata designs:

Possibly, as those elements which you described, especially where the lamps are, lamp technology is changing everyday and today you have these little LED modules which we have showcased here. These are not concept lights, these are available. Also for aerodynamics, the car has an air curtain inlet and there is an outlet on the inside of the wheel arch. Some of those elements will definitely make it to production.
