First Look Review: JAC T9 EV pick-up could be a UK workhorse with some tweaks

The JAC T9 EV is the fully electric version of the brand’s T9 pickup truck. Already on sale in several European markets, including Norway, Switzerland and Germany, the T9 EV targets buyers looking for a zero-emission alternative to diesel double-cab pickups.

While the model has not been confirmed for the UK, Professional Pickup reported in 2024 about the JAC hinting at introducing the T9 EV here in a few years.

Recently, we spent time with the global-spec JAC T9 EV to see what it could offer to British buyers.

Design

The T9 EV retains the same overall styling as the diesel-powered T9. The front end features a large upright grille finished in body colour with blue JAC lettering, flanked by LED headlights and LED daytime running lights. The bumper integrates silver skid-plate styling elements, while the bonnet features a raised centre section.

From the side, the T9 EV adopts a traditional double-cab pickup layout with four full-size doors, pronounced wheel arches, side steps and 18-inch alloy wheels. Roof rails and a power sunroof are also available.

At the rear, the pickup features a conventional tailgate design with vertical LED taillamps and an integrated cargo bed. Globally, JAC offers the pickup in seven exterior colours, including White, Silver, Black, Star Grey, Blue, Red and Grey.

Interior

Inside, the T9 EV features a 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital 7-inch instrument cluster. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with DAB digital radio, Bluetooth connectivity, wireless phone charging and multiple USB ports.

The driver’s seat features six-way electric adjustment, while the front passenger seat receives four-way electric adjustment. Heated front seats, automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers and an automatically dimming interior mirror are also included.

Higher-spec Luxury variants add comfort seats, a panoramic glass roof and additional exterior trim elements.

Experience in the JAC T9 Pickup

I spent time in the JAC T9 EV, and it does feel like an electrified conversion of a conventional pickup than a born-electric truck.

Getting into the front is helped by the side step and grab handle, but for my 6-foot frame, I still had to push the seat well back and manoeuvre my thighs under the steering wheel, even with the wheel set to its highest position.

Once seated, the driving position made a good impression. The pedal box is deep and well designed, and the dead pedal felt comfortable. The front seats offered good back support, good under-thigh support, nicely judged side bolstering and an adjustable headrest.

I had more than 18 cm of headroom above my head, which is excellent. Outward visibility was also fine, helped by the large glass area and big side mirrors.

The cabin is functional rather than plush. The red stitching on the seats, centre console and door cards adds some sportiness, and I liked the dial-type drive selector, drive mode buttons, large under-armrest storage bin, ventilated storage compartment, and the soft touch surface atop the dashboard. There are also a row of physical controls for fan speed, AC and temperature, which is welcome.

The panel gaps and edges between plastic pieces are not always uniform, and the mix of piano black, gloss silver and silver wood-effect trim feels a little busy. The centre AC vents also do not feel robust enough, and the steering wheel could have been thicker, though I liked the two-spoke design, and the chrome 12 o’clock marker.

The rear seat isn’t a strong point for the T9 EV, and it’s understandable, considering the intended use case. There is no grab handle, so I had to use the door to hoist myself in. With the front seat set for a 6-footer, my knees brushed the front seatback. I had about 10 cm of headroom.

The centre armrest helps comfort, and outward visibility is fine, but the rear AC vents feel basic, the slight hump around the AC console makes the middle seat impractical, and this is not a comfortable rear seat for someone my size.

Specifications

The JAC T9 EV measures 5,330 mm in length, 1,965 mm in width and 1,920 mm in height. The cargo bed measures 1,520 mm long, 1,590 mm wide and 470 mm deep. The wheelbase measures 3,110 mm, while ground clearance is 205 mm.

Power comes from a dual-motor four-wheel-drive system. The front motor produces 70 kW and 176 Nm, while the rear motor develops 150 kW and 340 Nm. Combined output stands at 220 kW (approximately 299 hp), while peak torque reaches 515 Nm.

The electric pickup can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 8.4 seconds and has a top speed of 140 km/h. Power is supplied by an 88.02 kWh CATL lithium iron phosphate battery pack with liquid cooling. The T9 EV offers up to 340 km (WLTP) of range.

AC charging is rated at up to 11 kW, while DC fast charging can take the battery from 15% to 80% in approximately 45 minutes. Vehicle-to-Load functionality is also available. The T9 EV has a payload capacity of up to 900 kg and can tow up to 2,000 kg with a braked trailer.

Price & Availability

In European markets, pricing typically ranges between around €43,000-€53,000 depending on specification.

Price wouldn’t be the main obstacle for the UK, though. The bigger issue we see is payload. UK tax rules use a simple cut-off: a double-cab pickup needs to carry at least one tonne (1,000kg) to count as a proper commercial vehicle.

That matters because it’s what lets VAT-registered businesses reclaim the VAT when they buy one, and most UK pickup buyers are businesses, not private drivers. The T9 EV carries 900kg. That’s 100 kg short of the line, so in the current state, it would miss out on the VAT reclaim that makes rival pickups attractive to UK trade buyers.
