First Look Review: Range Rover-inspired Jaecoo E5 certainly has substance!

The Jaecoo E5, an electric SUV from Chinese auto group Chery, is often initially defined by its Range Rover-like looks. While it no doubt creates an interesting road presence, we’re impressed by its decent specs, comfortable seats, and good equipment levels which are bundled into an accessible price point.

I recently had the opportunity to get up close with the Jaecoo E5 and assess its design, comfort, and key features, in a global specification in Asia. Here are some interesting observations I made:

Design

For an electric SUV that begins well under GBP 30,000, the Jaecoo E5 carries quite an upmarket appearance. Its upright front fascia, sleek rectangular front and rear lights, floating roofline, unbroken waistline, angular glasshouse, and dynamic rear-end collectively echo design cues associated with Range Rover models, giving it a unique visual presence than what is typical for its segment.

This white E5 which I experienced has been customised as part of a joint project between Jaecoo and aftermarket specialists Auto Glam (via Facebook) and Wild (via Facebook).

It features changes such as a Wild-designed special front bumper, faux grille extension, wheel arch trim, and faux rear diffuser, Autoglam-designed decals, Vage-designed multi-Y-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in Toyo Open Country rugged-terrain tyres, and a Hanuman roof box. These modifications lend the EV a considerably sportier and more adventurous styling than the regular E5.

Interior

Inside, the Jaecoo E5 has a glossy dashboard featuring an intricate mesh pattern, a two-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel featuring a technical weave pattern, a floating 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and an ambient lighting system. A 1.45 m2 panoramic sunroof brings plenty of natural light into the cabin while also enhancing the sense of space.

Jaecoo equips the E5 with features like a power tailgate, a 50-watt wireless smartphone charger, a 10.25-inch instrument cluster (8.8-inch unit in the UK-spec model), and an eight-speaker Sony sound system. Six-way power front seats with heating and ventilation functions and a dual-zone automatic climate control system considerably improve comfort.

Observations in the Jaecoo E5

At 5’7″ tall, I had to watch my head while getting into the Jaecoo E5, as the cantrail is relatively low. Once seated, the front seats felt snug, with supportive bolstering and a well-shaped backrest. In my driving position, I had more than 6.5 inches of headroom. Visibility posed no issues from any angle.

With the front seat in that position, I moved to the rear, where I had adequate legroom with generous knee room and good under-thigh support helped by the extended cushions, and a comfortable seating angle. Back support feels good for adult passengers.

In the unit that I experienced, amenities for rear passengers were limited, including a single USB Type-A port behind the centre console, a single air vent, and a fold-down centre armrest with two adjustable cupholders.
