The Jaguar I-Pace has been launched in India at a starting price of INR 1.06 crore (ex-showroom India). The only alternative right now is the Mercedes EQC, which costs INR 1.04 crore (ex-showroom). While the Audi e-tron Sportback is to arrive shortly, it may not be priced lower than these cars.
Jaguar Land Rover is importing the I-Pace under the 2,500-unit local homologation-free quota allowed by the government. So, it makes no mention of the Jaguar I-Pace range in India in the launch announcement. The European test cycle range (WLTP) is the closest reference we have for that aspect. We have covered that and more about the new Jaguar electric car further in the story.
JLR says that 22 Jaguar showrooms and service centres in 19 cities in India have installed more than 35 chargers to provide convenient charging to the Jaguar I-Pace customers. These retail outlets across these cities have the charging infrastructure and sales and after-sales support required for EVs. Jaguar I-Pace customers in India will be able to utilize Tata Power’s EZ Charge Network as well, which comprises over 200 charging points present at offices, residential complexes, restaurants, and malls, and even on highways.
In January, the first Jaguar I-Pace arrived in India, and Jaguar Land Rover shared pictures of this ‘Firenze Red’ unit, clicked at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nava Sheva Port). The milestone unit was in the top-of-the-line HSE trim.
JLR was taking Jaguar I-Pace pre-bookings from Indian customers since November. Here is everything you need to know about the Jaguar I-Pace in India:
Jaguar I-Pace Design
The Jaguar I-Pace has been well received and won the 2019 World Car of the Year award. Inspired by the Jaguar C-X75 supercar with a short, low bonnet, aero-enhanced roof design and curved rear screen, the I-Pace gets a cab-forward design with a contrasting squared-off rear, to reduce the drag co-efficient to 0.29 Cd. Jaguar’s new Matrix LED headlamps with trademark double-J graphic and sweeping indicators make for a sharp front. The electric SUV’s design has many talking points like the sweeping front fenders, dramatic curves, muscular haunches, strong waistline and 22-inch wheels.
With a wheelbase of 2,990 mm, the interior has a big amount of space for both the passengers and the luggage. The rear luggage compartment has a volume of 656 litres that can be increased to 1,453 litres with the seats folded flat. A full-size panoramic roof comes optional.
Range & Performance
Jaguar I-Pace claims sports car level performance combined with next-gen artificial intelligence technology and five-seat SUV practicality. Its 90 kWh Lithium-ion battery uses 432 pouch cells to deliver a range of 480 km (WLTP). Two electric motors placed at each axle offer 400 PS of power and 696 Nm of torque that can launch the I-Pace from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. With the battery placed as low as possible between the axles, it provides a 50:50 weight distribution. A double-wishbone front and integral link rear suspension influence the driving dynamics.
The aforementioned specs are for the EV400 variant, but now, JLR is making a cheaper ‘EV320’ variant as well. The Jaguar I-Pace EV320 has lower-output electric motors that generate 235 kW (320 PS) of power and 500 Nm of torque. A 0-100 km/h sprint takes 6.4 seconds instead of 4.8 seconds and the top speed is 180 km/h instead of 200 km/h. The range, however, is the same – 470 km (WLTP). JLR has launched the Jaguar I-Pace in India in the EV400 variant, but could release the EV320 later.
In India, the company offers customers a 7.4 kW AC wall charger for home/office charging and hasn’t brought the 11 kW unit that is rolling out in Europe. The 11 kW AC charger was launched last year for three phase markets and considerably reduces charging time (8.6 hours as compared to 12.75 hours for a full charge).
In India, JLR has tied up with Tata Power to prepare a skeletal charging infrastructure before customers walk into the dealers asking for a test drive. Tata Power will install charging solutions for Jaguar Land Rover across its retail network of 27 outlets in 24 cities besides a wallbox solution at the customer’s home or office in the aforementioned specification.
Besides, Jaguar I-Pace customers can access the wide network in the public charging infrastructure that Tata Power is building, with 700 charging outlets promised by the end of this month. Tata Power already has more than 200 charging points in more than 23 cities. The company provides a range of AC and DC chargers, starting from 7 kW to 50 kW capacity, across India for Tata Group brands (Jaguar, Land Rover & Tata Motors) as well as other OEMs like MG Motor. Charging the Jaguar I-Pace using a typical 50 kW charger for an hour can give it a range of up to 270 km (WLTP).
Interior & Features
As for the interior, the Jaguar I-Pace was introduced with the Touch Pro Duo ‘flight deck’ infotainment system along with the floating centre console, designed to minimise driver distraction. Now, though, there’s a new, smartphone-inspired ‘Pivi Pro’ infotainment system that features new and flat menu structure for navigating it easily. The number of steps required to lock a location for navigation has reduced by half, and it is possible to pan and zoom in and out of the map with a pinch of the fingers. A full-colour head-up display projects key information such as vehicle speed and navigation instructions onto the windscreen.
The instrument cluster is a 12-inch Interactive Driver Display providing the necessary information. JLR has enhanced the instrument cluster as well, with revised graphics to give a clearer SoC indication, and made the predictive range algorithm more accurate and consistent. Wireless smartphone charger joined the list of features last year, but it’s an optional one.
Customers can also use the Jaguar InControl Remote app to lock/unlock the car, know the battery charge level, to pre-condition the battery and set cabin temperature. The I-Pace is the first Jaguar able to receive wireless software updates.
Like other markets, India gets the Jaguar I-Pace in S, SE and HSE trims. However, the features included in these trims are different from what’s available in other places. For example, the SE and HSE trims in our market pack 19-inch wheels instead of 20-inch wheels. The most basic, S trim also has 19-inch wheels.
The S trim includes regular LED headlights, 8-way partly-electric adjustable seats, virtual instrument cluster, Pivi Pro infotainment system, 360-degree camera and 380-watt Meridian sound system as well. The SE trim differs with Premium LED headlights with DRLs and 12-way electric seats with memory function and leather upholstery. The HSE trim stand outs with Matrix LED headlights with DRLs, animated turn indicators, head-up display, 16-way electric seats with memory function and 825-watt Meridian 3D surround sound system.
