Mahindra has confirmed that it will be completely shutting down the operations of its GenZe electric two-wheeler brand around the end of 2020. GenZe was among the few companies that manufactured electric scooters in the USA and had temporarily halted operations due to the Coronavirus. M&M is looking at exiting loss-making international subsidiaries over the next 12 months to focus more on its core automotive and farm equipment businesses and the move comes amid the Coronavirus pandemic that has stalled economic growth globally.
The California-based company’s stocks and assets will be liquidated and dissolved completely within next six months while the technology and intellectual property of GenZe will be used within the Mahindra Group. GenZe has a manufacturing plant in Detroit where it produces electric bicycles and scooters, which found customers in ridesharing companies in the United States.
The GenZe 2.0 electric scooter is powered by a 1.6 kWh battery that offers a range of about 48 km per charge. It has a top speed of about 48 km/h and can be charged to full capacity in 3.5 hours. It comes with a detachable battery, fully digital instrument cluster, dedicated app and more. The vehicle has just one seat and a luggage holder at the rear, making it ready for last-mile delivery companies right out of the factory. The scooter is a perfect utility two-wheeler for city rides.
Mahindra was also seen testing the 2.0 electric scooter in India last year, and was rumoured to launch it this year. However a Mahindra official confirmed that the company was trying to launch the e-Ludix at a good price. We need to wait for further information about the company’s electric two-wheeler plans for India.
