First Look Review: Budget MG ZS Hybrid+ pairs spacious cabin with respectable mpg

MG introduced the new ZS Hybrid+ in 2024 as the latest generation of its popular B-segment SUV, replacing the well-known previous model with a new hybrid powertrain, new looks, and updated tech.

We recently spent some time with the global-spec MG ZS Hybrid+ to see what kind of package it offers, and if it is worth considering for UK buyers.

Design

The new MG ZS Hybrid+ adopts a more mature and cleaner design than its predecessor. The front features a sharper grille and slim LED headlights, while the sculpted body sides and redesigned rear give the SUV a more contemporary appearance.

Full LED lighting is standard across the range, while both trims feature roof rails and alloy wheels. The Trophy model distinguishes itself with 18-inch ‘Sabre’ alloy wheels and rear privacy glass. Overall, the styling remains conservative but modern, making the ZS look more substantial than before.

Interior

The MG ZS Hybrid+ features a five-seat cabin with a simple dashboard layout and a generous equipment list. A 12.3-inch HD infotainment touchscreen with navigation and live services is standard, alongside a 7-inch virtual driver display, keyless entry, automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers.

The SE trim comes equipped with rear parking sensors and a reversing camera, while the Trophy adds leather-style upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a six-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support and a 360-degree surround-view camera.

The cabin is focused on everyday usability, with a straightforward control layout and ample storage spaces for family trips. The updated interior also offers improved material quality compared with the outgoing model, while the larger infotainment display gives the dashboard a more modern appearance.

Experience in the ZS Hybrid+

I spent time in the MG ZS Hybrid+. The step-in height felt manageable for someone my height, and the door frames seem well judged for easy ingress and egress.

Once inside, the driving position was comfortable. The electrically adjustable front seat offered good back support, decent shoulder support and a nice balance between firmness and softness.

That said, for my 6-foot frame, I would have liked the seat base and backrest to be slightly wider. It was still comfortable, but not ideal for someone with a broader build.

Visibility was good, helped by the large windows, lower window line and rear quarter glass. Even with the panoramic sunroof, I had more than 10 cm of headroom left. The cabin uses plenty of hard plastics, but the execution is neat for this price segment, and it does not feel low-rent.

Moving to the rear, the doors open quite wide, which helps access. However, with the front seat set to my driving position, I had less than 4 cm of knee room.

My size 12 shoes could slide under the front seat, but I would have liked the rear seatback at a more relaxed angle. Besides, I also felt that a longer wheelbase would have made the rear seat more usable for someone my height.

Rear amenities include AC vents and a USB port, but a fold-down armrest would have improved comfort. Rear headroom, though, is excellent.

Specifications

The MG ZS Hybrid+ combines a 102 PS 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 136 PS electric traction motor producing 250 Nm of torque. The hybrid system delivers a combined output of 196 PS, with drive sent to the front wheels via an unusual 3-speed automatic transmission. MG quotes a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of 8.7 seconds.

Energy is supplied by a 1.83 kWh high-voltage battery, which is supported by a 45 kW generator that continuously recharges the battery during operation. MG quotes a fuel economy figure of 55.4 mpg under the WLTP Combined test cycle.

The new ZS measures approximately 4,430 mm in length, placing it firmly in the B-SUV segment alongside rivals such as the Toyota Yaris Cross and Renault Captur. Its larger footprint compared with the previous model translates into improved passenger and almost identical luggage space, despite the hybrid battery placement.

Safety equipment is comprehensive across both trims through MG Pilot. Standard features include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Active Emergency Braking (AEB) with pedestrian and bicycle detection, Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Traffic Jam Assist (TJA).

Pricing

The MG ZS Hybrid+ is officially available in the UK. Prices start from GBP 21,995 OTR for the SE trim, while the Trophy is priced from GBP 24,495 OTR. Both variants are backed by MG’s 7-year/80,000-mile manufacturer’s warranty.

At these prices, the ZS Hybrid+ is the most affordable full-hybrid SUV on sale in the UK, undercutting rivals such as the Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid, Renault Captur E-Tech, Hyundai Kona Hybrid and Nissan Juke Hybrid by a significant margin.

Those rivals return better fuel economy. The Yaris Cross and Kona Hybrid both exceed 60 mpg on the WLTP cycle against the ZS’s 55.4 mpg, but none can match the MG on price or standard equipment. For buyers who prioritise value over fuel efficiency, the ZS Hybrid+ is a compelling buy.
