New BMW X5 (G65) poised to get mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, BEV, EREV & FCEV variants

BMW is developing the fifth-generation X5, codenamed G65, for launch in 2026. The SUV remains one of the company’s strongest sellers globally, and the new model is expected to broaden its appeal with mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, range-extender electric, fully electric and hydrogen fuel cell variants.

Here’s my analysis of the BMW G65 prepared based on media reports, BMW’s official information, and our observations from recent spy photos, and time spent with the Neue Klasse X concept.

Exterior

The G65 adopts design cues from the Neue Klasse X concept, with a sharper face, slim headlamps, and a cleaner profile. Prototypes reveal a sleeker silhouette with a sloping tailgate and a more rounded rear. Large side windows preserve the airy feel, while top trims will sit on 22-inch alloys. For the first time, all global versions are expected to exceed five metres in length, partly to accommodate the battery in the upcoming all-electric iX5.

Interior

The cabin departs from the current Curved Display, introducing a wide 18-inch floating infotainment screen running BMW’s new Operating System X. A Panoramic Display is expected to stretch across the dashboard, replacing the iDrive controller with touch, voice, and haptic steering wheel inputs. Early prototypes show a minimalist centre console with a toggle gear selector.

A passenger-side display is planned for select variants, while ambient lighting will include a new ‘Ceremonial Light Carpet’ welcome function, as per BimmerPost forum.

Specifications

Backed by a report on Autocar UK, the next-generation X5 will carry forward BMW’s strategy of offering one of the broadest ranges of powertrains in the segment. Petrol and diesel engines with mild-hybrid technology will continue to serve markets with strong demand for combustion models.

The xDrive40i will feature a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol unit assisted by a 48-volt system, while the xDrive40d will provide a similar arrangement for diesel-leaning regions, including the UK. Both are expected to deliver gains in efficiency and refinement.

Plug-in hybrid technology will take a more prominent role in the new line-up. BMW is developing two variants: the M60e, aimed primarily at Europe, which will pair a 3.0-litre petrol engine with a more powerful electric motor for improved performance, and the xDrive50e, which is expected to deliver a stronger electric-only range alongside balanced power delivery. These updates reflect BMW’s intent to meet tightening emissions standards while retaining performance credibility.

Beyond conventional hybrids, BMW will revisit range-extender technology first seen in the i3, as per Autocar UK. The extended-range X5 is expected to integrate ZF’s “eRE” technology, where the petrol engine acting purely as a generator. This configuration is designed to provide a combined driving range in excess of 600 miles, significantly reducing concerns over charging availability during long-distance use.

A first-ever fully electric iX5 will be another first for X5 family. Built around BMW’s latest electric drive technology, it will be offered in multiple variants, including an M Performance flagship with a twin-motor set-up generating over 600 hp. This model will compete directly with high-performance luxury EVs from Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Tesla.

I got to see the first-gen iX5 Hydrogen in Paris in late 2024, which is a limited-edition model. The next-gen iX5, with the company’s third-gen hydrogen fuel cell stack is expected to be available widely.

BMW will begin series production of its third-generation fuel cell system in Austria in 2028. Developed with Toyota, the new system is 25% more compact, delivers higher power density, and is expected to serve the G65. The vehicle’s range, output, and efficiency will be better compared to the iX5 Hydrogen.

Launch

The next-gen BMW X5 could go on sale in the UK sometime in mid-2026, with prices starting at around GBP 75,000. I see only the mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and pure electric variants arriving in showrooms next year.

Australia and New Zealand may receive the all-new X5 and first-ever iX5 EV towards the end of 2026. It’s unclear at this point whether the first-ever BMW X5 EREV, primarily engineered for markets like China and the U.S., will be sold in RHD-spec. Regardless, I don’t see this derivative going on sale anywhere before 2027.

The next-gen BMW iX5 FCEV, which should be aimed at the U.S. (California), Japan, and South Korea, is scheduled to follow in 2028. Unlike the current model, it should be commercially available, but in a limited volume. A UK launch in this case, too, remains unconfirmed at this point.
