2022 Mercedes A-Class (facelift) could feature deeper electrification [Update]

A new Mercedes A-Class is in the works, a spy video from YouTube channel walkoARTvideos has revealed. Electrification is likely to deepen in the smallest Merc with the mid-cycle update. We explain how in this story.

2022 Mercedes A-Class powertrains

The sole electrification option in the present-day A-Class is the plug-in hybrid variant A 250 e. In the incoming 2022 Mercedes A-Class, Daimler could offer mild-hybrid variants. The A 250 and A 35 AMG variants could get the M 254 2.0-litre petrol engine with an integrated starter generator (ISG) and a 48-volt vehicle electrical system.

In the 2021 Mercedes C-Class, the M 254 2.0-litre petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology produces 190 kW or 258 PS of power and 400 Nm of torque. The ISG provides an electric boost with 15 kW or 20 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque. It assists the combustion engine at low engine speeds, making up for the turbo-lag. The car can “glide” with the engine switched off. A 9-speed automatic transmission sends drive to the wheels.

Daimler has developed a 1.5-litre petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology as well. In this case, the engine produces 125 kW (170 PS) and 250 Nm, and the motor-generator 15 kW (20 PS) and 200 Nm. We don’t know if the company plans to offer the new A-Class with this electrified engine. Similarly, there’s no word on any revisions for the A 250 e variant’s plug-in hybrid system.

The A 250 e combines the M 282 1.3-litre engine with an electric motor. The engine achieves 118 kW (160 PS) and 250 Nm, and the e-motor delivers 75 kW and 300 Nm. The resulting combined power and combined torque outputs are 160 kW (218 PS) and 450 Nm, respectively. The transmission is an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic unit. The battery pack powering the traction motor is a 15.6 kWh lithium-ion unit that gives a zero-emission range of 78 km or 48 miles on the WLTP cycle.

Evident in WalkoART’s photos, cosmetic changes on the 2022 Mercedes A-Class include new bumpers, revised grille designs, tweaked headlamp and tail lamp graphics, and fresh alloy wheel choices. Expect new options for the body colour, interior trim, and upholstery as well. Daimler may improve the functioning of the A-Class’ MBUX system and add features with the mid-life refresh.

YouTube channel AutoYa created a speculative rendering of what the 2022 Mercedes-Benz A-Class might look like. The headlamps look the same, and so does the radiator grille, but it features new vertical slats. A new front bumper merges the side air inlets with the split lower air intake. The design changes would vary as per the trim level. This particular rendering previews the new model in the AMG Line grade with sporty black wheels and black mirrors.
