Nissan Sylphy e-Power (Nissan Sentra hybrid) likely to launch in 2021

Reports coming out of China detail that the Nissan Sylphy (known globally as the Nissan Sentra) codenamed Nissan L21B will be receiving e-Power technology.

In 2018, Nissan’s Chinese joint venture partner Dongfeng said it plans to introduce 20 electrified (EV + e-Power) models under its 4 brands by 2022, with Nissan e-Power technology available on core models. By 2022, it estimated that 30% of DFL’s sales will be from products equipped with EV drivetrain and e-Power tech. Around that time, Nissan said it would bring out 3 new EVs and 5 new e-Power models in Japan by FY2022.

Nissan launched the new generation Sylphy at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show with a lower roofline and wider shoulders and the latest design features such as V-motion grille, new signature LED DRLs, LED projector headlamps and LED tail lamps. Inside there’s a 4.2-inch digital MID, 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a hands-free text messaging assistant – Siri Eyes Free and Google Assistant voice recognition as standard. Optional equipment also includes an 8.0-inch infotainment system with NissanConnect that has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Powering the Nissan Sylphy is a new 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine that makes 149 hp of maximum power and 198 Nm of peak torque. Nissan has fitted the Sylphy with several advanced driver assistance systems as standard including Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), High Beam Assist (HBA) and Rear Automatic Braking (RAB), 10 air bags, Rear Door Alert (RDA), and Intelligent Driver Alertness (I-DA).

Nissan retails e-Power variants of the Note, Serena and the Kicks. The e-Power is Nissan’s Series hybrid technology that offers 30% higher fuel efficiency than a comparable petrol vehicle with the torque level of a 2.0L Nissan engine (as observed on the Note ePower).

Just this month, Nissan introduced the new Kicks with the e-Power system in Thailand that combines a 1.2-litre engine with an electric motor and a battery. The engine charges up the battery that powers the electric motor, which drives the wheels. Nissan already has e-Power models with the Note and Serena in Japan and Hong Kong.

The Nissan Kicks e-Power makes a maximum power of 129 PS and 260 Nm of torque and is reported to offer a fuel efficiency of 23.4 km/l. The Kicks e-Power has four driving modes – EV, Eco, S and Normal. The powertrain uses the engine only to charge the battery and the wheels are driven by the electric motor. As the engine runs at an optimal speed to charge the battery, it results in better fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions. Expect the same system with tweaks to be applied on the new Nissan Sylphy.
