Okinawa outsells Hero Electric & Ather in the high-speed electric scooter segment

According to numbers published by Autocar Professional, Okinawa Scooters has outsold Hero Electric and Ather Energy in the high-speed electric scooter segment for FY2020 with the sales crossing 10,000 units. With this, Okinawa becomes the only brand to have crossed the 10,000 unit sales mark in the high-speed electric scooter segment.

The company sold a total of 10,133 units of high-speed electric scooters, significantly more than Hero Electric, which sold 7,399 units and Ather Energy that has a total of 2,499 units sold in FY2020, claims Autocar Professional. A total of 156,000 electric vehicles were sold in the last financial year of which 152,000 were two-wheelers. Most of these were from the low-speed electric scooter segment that has a maximum speed of 25 km/h and don’t need registration. Around 25,000 units of high-speed scooters were sold in FY2020 in India. It is reported that Okinawa sold an average of 844 units of high-speed electric scooters per month while Hero Electric managed to sell 617 units, with Ather Energy clocking an average of 242 units per month.

Autocar Professional’s sales report for high-speed electric scooters in FY2020

For Okinawa, the demand was strong from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, and Hero Electric derived most of its sales from Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Haryana, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, the report adds.

Okinawa has stated that after it resumed partial operations after lockdown relaxations in the month of May 2020, the company had sold over 1,000 electric scooters within a month. With only 60 to 70 per cent of its touchpoints being operational across the country, Okinawa was able to dispatch 1,200 units. Okinawa’s next big launch is the Oki100 electric motorcycle that has been confirmed for launch in the October-December 2020 period and is announced as a highly-localized product with only the battery cells imported. In early-2021, the company will introduce the Okinawa Cruiser maxiscooter-type model.

Ather Energy will start deliveries of the new 450 Series later this year and the company is planning an exchange program for petrol scooters. Ampere Electric has just come out with the high-speed model Magnus Pro which has been introduced in Bangalore and is to be released in more cities later. Bajaj will resume production of the Chetak shortly, and the entry of new players like TVS, Bgauss, Bird Electric and Niu, during the period of an accelerated adoption of personal mobility, could turn 2021 into a record year for electric vehicle sales.
