Toyota Hilux Electric looks urban- & adventure-ready in Ash Grey

Update: Specifications and Price & Release Date sections revised.

The ninth generation of the Toyota Hilux includes its first-ever battery-electric variant and will also gain a hydrogen fuel-cell electric variant in 2028.

Ahead of the UK launch, we had a chance to get up close with an Ash Grey Toyota Hilux Electric in the global specification (branded Hilux Travo-e), exploring its design, features, comfort, and specifications.

Design

The all-new Toyota Hilux adopts a sharper and more contemporary exterior that suits the forward-looking character of the BEV variant. It looks rugged and chunky, but the design now feels more restrained and mature.

The upright front incorporates a special body-coloured panel that blanks off most of its upper grille area. An embossed hexagonal pattern on this faux grille adds texture, while the slim, sharp headlamps give the front end a modern, technical look.

Instead of open side air intakes, the bumper uses covered gloss black surfaces. The high-set bonnet features subtle power domes that add to its tough character.

Along the sides, the high ground clearance, pronounced trapezoidal wheel arches, assist steps, and strong shoulder line add to the Hilux Electric’s robust stance.

The 17-inch two-tone alloy wheels have a more aerodynamic design, which distinguishes the electric variant. Larger 18-inch wheels would have filled the arches better, but Toyota is prioritising driving range and ride comfort.

At the rear, the Hilux Electric features an embossed “TOYOTA” inscription, the “Beyond Zero” badge, and “BEV” lettering on the tailgate, which convey its all-electric identity without altering the familiar look.

Interior

The sleek design of the dashboard, the 12.3-inch free-standing central display, and the well-organised buttons, switches, and knobs give the cabin the family look and maintain usability. The electric pickup truck shares its chunky steering wheel with the Land Cruiser, also called Prado and Land Cruiser 250 in some markets.

Toyota offers an electric power steering system in the Hilux Electric, opening the door for a suite of advanced driver assistance systems and increasing driving comfort. It also offers features like a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, an 8-way power-adjustable driver seat with lumbar support, a wireless smartphone charger, and an optional JBL premium audio system.

Heated rear seats, Multi-Terrain Select, Downhill Assist Control, and a Multi-Terrain Monitor are also available on higher trims.

Specifications

Toyota has not released the final specifications of the UK-spec Hilux BEV, but it has said that it will have a WLTP range of up to 159 miles, 196 hp output, and 1,700 kg of towing capacity. The model will be offered in double-cab form with a five-seat layout, with a two-seat conversion option arriving later in 2026.

In Norway, one of the first European markets where Toyota has launched the Hilux Electric, the electric pickup truck measures 5,320 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width, and 1,800 mm in height and has a 3,085 mm wheelbase. Its cargo bed is 1,525 mm long, 1,540 mm wide, and 480 mm tall.

Here, Toyota only offers a dual-motor AWD configuration, with an 82.2 kW (110 bhp)/205.5 Nm (152 lb.-ft.) motor powering the front wheels and a 129.3 kW (173 bhp)/268.6 Nm (198 lb.-ft.) motor powering the rear wheels.

Packing 144 kW (193 bhp) of system power, the Hilux Electric can reach from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in less than 10 seconds and achieve a top speed of 140 km/h (87 mph). It can haul up to 740 kg of payload and tow up to 1.6 tonnes.

Toyota Hilux Electric charging port

A 54 kWh (net) battery pack powers the two motors, and it supports charging at up to 10 kW (AC)/125 kW (DC). A 10-100% AC charging session takes 6.5 hours, while a 10-80% DC charging session takes 30 minutes. Toyota expects the 54 kWh battery pack to deliver a WLTP range of up to 257 km (160 miles).
