From fully-faired to naked, long-range to high speed, 2021 could turn out to be the year of the electric bike (electric motorcycle) boom in India.
Here are 10 electric bikes launching in India this year with their expected prices (ex-showroom) and launch timelines. Note that some of the ETA is determined from the guidance received before the full impact of the COVID-19.
BattRE Electric bike
Jaipur-based BattRE Electric Mobility confirmed to EVW last year that it will launch a new electric bike in India in 2021. Nischal Chaudhary, the company’s founder, revealed in an exclusive interaction that a high-speed motorcycle is in the works. The company has developed a prototype and plans to heavily localise it.
The BattRE electric bike will have a truly Indian heart, with the motor and controller sourced locally. The company has already signed an MoU with an Indian company for getting the motor and controller. PureEV ETRYST 350 ‘Sport’ Bike

Last year, we had reported that the IIT Hyderabad incubated startup PURENERGY (PureEV) plans to launch a new electric bike equivalent to an entry-level Bajaj Pulsar in size – the Etryst 350. The Etryst 350 would have a 3.5 kWh battery pack that provides a range of 120 km and be priced economically compared to petrol bikes with similar pickup and power. The battery pack, designed in-house, would carry a five-year warranty. There’s no word on the power output of the motor, but reports say that the top speed is 85 km/h.
PureEV plans to deploy 50 demo units of the Etryst 350 for test drives nationwide by March. The launch would happen on 15 August, and while the availability would be limited to Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune initially, it would be expanded by the end of the year. PureEV already has 100+ touch points in India.
The PureEV electric motorcycle will have a top speed of 100 km/h according to Mr Gopinath, Head – Sales & Marketing, CK Motors that is the manufacturing and distribution partner for PureEV in South India. Prototype testing of the ‘hunky’ motorcycle has begun and the company, we are told, is upbeat about what the bike could do to its sales. It is expected with a higher localisation than the company’s current products.

The Surge can return a range of 100 km in the base version and the bike’s range can be extended by adding more batteries (the bike can support up to three batteries) up to 200 km or 300 km.
The Surge is also the first electric bike to have a gearbox. The battery can be charged in 3 hours 20 minutes through standard charging and in 30 minutes with fast charging. The Surge was planned to be launched in September or October last year but the COVID-19 situation has pushed the launch to this year. There will be two variants on offer – one with a 10 kW motor with a top speed of 120 km/h and 0-60 km/h time of under 4 seconds; another with a 6 kW motor with a top speed of 100 km/h and 0-60 km/h time of under 5 seconds.
