Volkswagen will be showcasing the I.D. CROZZ electric SUV at the Auto Expo 2020, that opens on 5th of February 2020 for the media, as per a report on CarAndBike.com. The I.D. CROZZ was first showcased at Auto Shanghai 2017 followed by a slightly evolved version (I.D.CROZZ II) later the same year at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The I.D. CROZZ is one of first EVs in Volkswagen’s all-electric portfolio that will have 23 models by 2025.
The road-going version of the I.D. CROZZ will probably be named the ID.4, and the company has confirmed that it will launch the model next year in the global market with production confirmed in China, Germany and USA.
The I.D. CROZZ is based on the Modular Electric Drive Matrix like all other I.D. cars. Combining 302-hp electric motors in an all-wheel-drive layout, I.D. CROZZ will have a 500 km driving range on the New European Drive Cycle. With the help of a 150 kW DC fast charger, its 83.0-kWh battery pack can be charged to 80 percent in 30 minutes. The electric SUV can reach a top speed of 180 kmph and gets a rear-biased all-wheel-drive layout supported by a front strut-type/rear multi-link suspension setup.
The design of the I.D. CROZZ relates to the original Volkswagen Beetle with the smooth, grille-free nose. The LED headlights on the concept move and even communicate with other drivers when its on-demand autopilot system is engaged. The platform uses a battery tray in the floor of the car to maximize usable volume and when driven on autopilot, the I.D. Pilot system retracts the steering wheel into the dash. These far-out features are not expected to make it into production due to government safety regulations.
Key information of the car is relayed to the driver through a heads-up display and an augmented-reality windshield. The panoramic sunroof gets a motion-controlled movable shade that cuts glare while offering a soft ambient light. Features like touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, WiFi hotspot, wireless phone charging and other smart features will surely find their way into the production vehicle.
Though the chances of this EV to go on sale in India are next to nil (the ID.3 and the ID.Entry models look more likely due to the lower price and compact size), the display will act as a technological showcase and the expression of Volkswagen’s interest and capability in the EV space. Globally, Volkswagen has big plans and has revealed that it will spend over $30 billion on electric vehicles by 2023, by which it intends to increase the share of electric vehicles to 40% of its global sales.
