Coimbatore-based Ampere Electric Vehicles is one of the recognized players in the electric scooter market, having launched in 2008 to being acquired by Greaves Cotton Ltd last year. While it enjoys about 20 per cent market share in India (company data as of December 2019), to expand sales, Ampere has set foot in Nepal by opening its first dealership in the country. This move will pave the way for a new future for its electric scooters outside the Indian market.

Devshworup, Ampere Electric’s Nepal channel partner said they were delighted to join hands with Ampere Electric for the first EV dealership in Nepal. The channel partner added that Ampere’s experience in the EV space with electric scooter models will help the company pave the way for sustainable solutions. The Nepali government’s support on New or Clean Energy Vehicles (NEV) has made this partnership possible and together this will create a win-win situation for buyers as well as the environment. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation, they are strictly following the norms prescribed by the authorities and hence will deliver the vehicle post the lockdown. Bookings of the scooters will be through the web.

The online booking and digital approach in sales will help the company reach out to a wide audience quickly. Ampere would expect an increase in demand for scooters when the situation becomes stable after Covid-19 and the market settles down. This would be a promising opportunity for new e-mobility customers. The electric scooter segment is widely popular among e-commerce delivery services for the low operating and running costs these scooters offer. The new offerings from Ampere electric vehicles can look to capitalize that space.

ElectricVehicleWeb learns that Ampere plans to offer two models in the mountain nation, namely Reo and Zeal electric scooters powered by Lithium Ion battery.

Ampere Zeal

Ampere Zeal scooter

The Zeal, one of the popular models in India, is the high-speed offering with a top speed of 55 km/h with a claimed range of 75 km/charge. It offers features like digital display, and a portable battery pack that takes 6 hours for a full charge. It has a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 60 V/30 Ah a 1200 W motor.

Ampere Reo

The Reo (right) is the entry-level product with a top speed limited to 25 km/h. Ampere sells its models through Amazon in India as well.

Reo meanwhile is the budget offering of the two. It has a top speed of 25 km/h which is much lesser than the Ampere Zeal and has a range of 55-65 km/charge. It also has a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 48 V/24 Ah supporting a 250 W motor. The battery takes 5-6 hours to charge from empty. It, however, misses out on the some of the features of the Zeal such as digital display.

Both scooters aim to please the rising audience for e-mobility and establish a presence for Ampere outside India.
