Ferrari 296 GTB Hybrid orders are “flowing fast,” says Elkann

The V6 Ferrari that the media speculated as the modern-day Ferrari Dino for six years finally broke cover as the Ferrari 296 GTB in June 2021. The entry-level Ferrari hybrid car is quickly gaining traction in the marketplace.

John Elkann, the Chairman and Interim CEO of Ferrari, briefly talked about the 296 GTB’s response during the company’s Q2 2021 earnings conference call. “Orders are flowing fast,” Elkann said, indicating a high initial demand. Customer deliveries of the company’s first V6 hybrid road car’s will begin in Q2 2022 (April-June 2022).

Performance

The Ferrari 296 GTB is the second Ferrari PHEV, or third if you count the Ferrari SF90 Stradale separately from the Ferrari SF90 coupe. However, it is the Prancing Horse’s first road car with a RWD-only PHEV architecture in which it has integrated the ICE with a rear-mounted electric motor. The ICE is a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 mill that produces 663 PS (654 bhp), while the electric motor generates 167 PS (165 bhp). The system power and system torque outputs are 830 PS (818 bhp) and 740 Nm, respectively. An 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission sends the power to the wheels.

The Ferrari 296 GTB can accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 2.9 seconds, and go on further to 200 km/h (124 mph) in an additional 4.4 seconds (0-200 km/h or 0-124 mph in 7.3 seconds). The top speed of the plug-in hybrid Ferrari is 330 km/h (205 mph). The battery pack, located under the floor, comprises 80 cell modules connected in series and has an energy content of 7.45 kWh. It is possible to drive using solely electric power, with an ‘eDrive’ drive mode. The top speed reduces to 135 km/h (84 mph) in this drive mode, and the driver can cruise silently for a distance of 25 km (16 miles)*.

On the Ferrari Purosangue

The next major electrified Ferrari launch is going to be the Ferrari Purosangue (codename: Ferrari F175) in 2022. The first Ferrari FUV (that’s what Ferrari calls its SUV) will likely be a hybrid. Reports suggest that there are two more FUV models in the making, internally called ‘Ferrari F244’ and ‘Ferrari F245,’ and both could be 100% EVs (BEVs). Beyond 2030, Ferrari could use hydrogen fuel-cell powertrains as well for its zero-emission models.

We’ll have changes within the energy supply, which could lead to having alternatives, for example, e-fuels or hydrogen. But that is really a 2030, 2040 and most likely midpoint 2035, where we’ll see this happening.
