All you need to know about the UK-likely Wey Coffee 01

Update: ‘Early EV version spotted in China’ section added.

Chinese brand Wey of Great Wall Motors will likely launch in the UK market with its first product as the Wey Coffee 01 by the end of 2023. Showcased at the IAA Mobility 2021, the Coffee 01 is a plug-in electric premium SUV capable of an impressive all-electric range of 93 miles. It is reported that GWM is working on the RHD version, and an update on the UK launch is expected this year.

Great Wall Motors has confirmed the Ora brand of EVs for the British market, which will be launched this year.

Take a look at what we already know about the electrified crossover:

Name

‘Coffee 01’ may seem odd for an SUV, but it’s not the final name. Johnson Qiang, Executive Vice President, Great Wall Motor (Europe), has told Automotive News Europe that the company will conduct a poll to decide the launch-intent name. Qiang does like the existing name, though, as people across the globe know and enjoy coffee, and it connects to family life, work-life, and leisure time. In China, Great Wall Motor launched the Wey Coffee 01 as Wey Mocha in May 2021. There are two more coffee-named Wey models for buyers in China: Wey Latte and Wey Macchiato.

Design

The Wey Coffee 01’s design is highlighted by the SUV’s large front grille, at the centre of which is the Wey logo. Sharp headlamps flank the sides, below which sit large air intakes. The bumper features a faux skidplate finished in aluminium. Off to the side, 21-inch wheels hold dominate the profile while flush door handles allow for a flat finish. This is broken by a sharp shoulder line that meets the tails lamps at the rear. The Coffee measures 4,870 mm in length, 1,960 mm in width and 1,690 mm in height while the wheelbase measures 2,910 mm.

Powertrain

The Coffee 01 will be powered by a 150 kW 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine combined with electric motors producing 110 kW and 135 kW. Total system output according to the company measures 350 kW and 847 Nm of torque. A 9-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission sends power to the wheels.

Powering the electric motors is a sizeable 41.8 kWh battery pack. Wey hasn’t released details about charging, however, the company claims an all-electric range of 150 km (93 miles). In all-electric mode, the SUV can also sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in seven seconds reaching top speeds of 135 km/h. When running on all horses, the 0-100 can be achieved in five seconds with top speeds of 235 km/h (146 mph).

Interiors

Wey says there will be four cockpit displays. A 9.2-inch display and a 7.5-inch display would do duty as the instrument cluster and augmented reality head-up display respectively. Additionally, a 14.6-inch touchscreen would act as an infotainment system and a final 9-inch aircon display.

Features

The Wey Coffee will also come with all the bells and whistles. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, the SUV gets 5G connectivity, facial recognition and OTA updates. Additionally, it gets 5-millimetre wave radar, 12 ultrasonic radars and four cameras for a 360-degree view. These also allow for motorway driving assists as well as automatic parking along with a range of other safety tech.

Launch

Currently, the Wey Coffee 01 will launch first in Germany in the first half of 2022 with other markets following soon after. Prices could start between EUR 40,000 and 45,000.

Early EV version spotted in China

According to d1ev.com, spy shots of a pure electric version of the Wey Coffee 01 have emerged. Called the Wey Mocha in China, it’s clear from the spy images that this is an early EV prototype as we can note the electric powertrain inside the hood. The body is identical to that of the Coffee 01, which could mean that Wey is reworking the carriage to accommodate an electric powertrain, instead of a dedicated EV skateboard.

The report adds that the EV is internally called the DE30, and the project is likely to have both FWD and AWD setups. Wey is working on two architectures, 400V and 800V and the motor components are being provided by Nidec and Honeycomb Yichuang. While the project is clearly in the R&D stage, there’s no timeline for its market release. It’s also speculated on d1ev that Wey might “platform the DE30” for usage in future EVs.
