Bajaj Chetak sales set to reach a new high in October

As Bajaj Auto finally manages to streamline the Chetak production, the delivery count is continuing to rise month after month. Rajiv Bajaj, MD, Bajaj Auto, has revealed to CNBC-TV18 that the company is on its way to record the third monthly sales increase in a row for the Chetak electric scooter. Below is what he has said:

Chetak is on its way to records hitting like 300+ electric scooters this month, which I think brings us within the zone of the pioneer Ather (Energy), who by the way I admire very much.

Bajaj Chetak sales are showing a strong sign of recovery for Bajaj Auto’s new electric mobility business. Last month, for the second month in a row, Bajaj Chetak sales had seen a positive change. The Chetak is a light-year away from catching the mainstream competitors, though.

Sales data shared on the web (Bajaj does not provide numbers for each model) suggests that Bajaj Auto restarted deliveries of the Chetak following the national lockdown in the month of July. The company shipped 120 units of the new electric scooter that month. In August, Bajaj Chetak sales grew to 192 units and in September, the monthly sales figure rose further, to 288 units. Bajaj Auto officials have corroborated this figure, saying that the company has sold about 300 units in September, as per a recent cnbctv18.com report.

Bajaj Chetak sales will grow further in October & November due to the festive season.

The year-to-date cumulative Bajaj Chetak sales totals to 812 vehicles as per the sales data on the web. However, Bajaj Auto officials have told the business publication that the company has dispatched only 600 units of the high-speed electric scooter so far. Rakesh Sharma, Director, Bajaj Auto, revealed to the news media channel that the company plans to deliver all pending orders by December.

Bajaj Auto had virtually hibernated Chetak operations apart from fulfilling pending orders due to supply chain issues following the COVID-19 outbreak. The escalation of India-China border tensions in July worsened the matters, as some core components come from China including the city of Wuhan. The company decided to open order books and launch an expansion drive for the Chetak electric scooter only after it sorts out the localisation. Now, it seems like it has started to figure that out.

Bajaj Auto will launch the Chetak electric scooter in 28 new cities in the near future. Currently, Bajaj Chetak sales are limited to Pune and Bengaluru.

Signalling normalisation of Chetak electric scooter production, Sharma said: “We are planning to introduce Chetak into other markets from the fourth quarter this year.” He confirmed that the Phase I expansion plan is to launch the new electric scooter in 28 new cities and make it available in a total of 30 cities. Expect the 28 new cities for Bajaj Chetak sales to include Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kochi, Surat, Ahmedabad, Coimbatore and many other cities of India which are longing for an electric scooter that isn’t a Chinese vehicle assembled in India with local stickers and graphics.
