By December 2021, Volvo Cars would have two compact EVs in showrooms, the XC40 Recharge and Volvo C40 Recharge. Here’s how the all-electric SUV and SUV coupe compare on paper.
Design & Interior
The Volvo C40 Recharge’s main differences are its lower profile and a much sleeker roofline. Moreover, it is the first Volvo to feature Pixel LED headlights. The headlights, front bumper, and faux upper grille carry a sleeker design to complement the more dynamic proportions.
The rear-end is noticeably more appealing with the wider and more technical-looking light clusters, the two spoilers, and the more strongly emphasized concave curve of the tailgate. The interior design is the same, but the colour and deco options are unique to the model.
Specifications
The Volvo C40 Recharge is 4,431 mm long, 2,035 mm wide, and 1,582 mm tall, 6 mm longer, 1 mm wider, and 69 mm lower than the XC40 Recharge. The wheelbase of both compact EVs is the same – 2,702 mm. The interior space takes a hit because of the coupe styling, as seen in the table below:

The Volvo XC40 Recharge and Volvo C40 Recharge make use of a standard 75 kWh (net/usable)/78 kWh (gross/total) battery pack and two electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear, which generate a combined power and a combined torque of 300 kW (408 PS/402 bhp) and 660 Nm, respectively.
The Volvo electric car models support AC charging at up to 11 kW and DC charging at up to 150 kW. Fully charging their battery pack using an 11 kW AC charger takes 8 hours, while 40 minutes is taken to fast-charge from 0-80% SoC using a 150 kW DC charger. The SUV can deliver a range of up to 418 km (WLTP), while the SUV coupe can go up to 420 km (Estimated WLTP) on a full charge.
The XC40 Recharge can accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.9 seconds, and the C40 Recharge, though aerodynamically better, is not any quicker or faster. Both models have a top speed of 180 km/h (112 mph).
Features
Apart from the Pixel LED headlights, the Volvo C40 Recharge shares most of its features with the XC40 Recharge. However, it is the first Volvo model to have a completely leather-free interior. The Android Automotive OS-based touchscreen infotainment system with Google Play Store, Google Maps, Google Assistant, and more built-in Google apps and services of the XC40 Recharge is included in the C40. Unlimited data and OTA software updates are also part of the package. More details are yet to be revealed.
Release Date
The Volvo C40 Recharge is scheduled to go into production at the Ghent plant (Belgium) this autumn, and sales should begin by the end of the year. The Volvo XC40 Recharge, which is already under production at this factory, is on sale and costs SEK 674 900 (EUR 66,627.82) in Sweden and has just reached dealerships in the United States.
